While ‘The Alchemist’ may not appeal to all readers, it is still enjoyable and offers valuable life lessons. It is essential to recognize that spirituality can take many forms and should not be limited to a single portrayal or perspective. For readers like me looking for a more grounded and relatable portrayal of spirituality, the novel’s fantastical elements may detract from the overall message. These mystical forces and supernatural events make spirituality seem otherworldly and disconnected from everyday life. However, in my opinion, the novel’s magical elements add to its charm and appeal, but they also distanced me as I view spirituality as a grounded and practical pursuit. There is an excessive use of fantasy and mysticism in the book to make the story appear more spiritual. Another quote from the book that stands out is, “The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.” which emphasizes the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. One of the most famous quotes from the book is, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” It highlights the importance of perseverance and belief in oneself, a message that may inspire readers to pursue their dreams.
As the protagonist, Santiago sets out on his journey, he encounters various obstacles and learns important life lessons along the way. One of the key themes in the book is the idea of following one’s personal legend or destiny. While the book has gained a cult following, it did not appeal to me, and I found it to be a rather average read. When my brother gifted it to me, I was filled with anticipation and excitement, hoping that it would be a life-changing read. In the case of ‘The Alchemist,’ I had heard so much about it and had been curious for a long time. It’s almost as if the book chooses us, rather than the other way around. I believe that a reader’s emotional journey leading up to discovering a book can significantly impact how they perceive it and how deeply it resonates with them. ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho is a novel that has captivated readers for many years, drawing inspiration from Rumi’s poetry and Arabic folktales.
